SESSION TOPICS
Session 1

Leicha Bragg - SESSION FULL
BECOMING PROFICIENT AT PROBLEM SOLVING AND REASONING
middle/upper primary

The Proficiency Strands are the essence of the Australian Curriculum that engages our students in thinking and doing mathematics. These strands are the glue that ties together the Content Strands. In this session we will highlight two of the Proficiency Strands; Problem solving and Reasoning. An array of stimulating tasks and strategies will be examined that encourage students to analyse, justify, and explain their thinking. Engaging problem solving investigations will be presented to assist students construct inferences and generalisations.

Rosemary Irons
TEACHING NUMBER CONCEPTS
lower primary

This session will focus on the development of a comprehensive understanding of whole numbers to 100 (and beyond). An overall teaching plan to encompass all of the important models for number, will be described. Emphasis will be given to the role of materials and strategies that can be used to show the key models - relative position (the important representation for mental computation) and place value (the key to reading and writing numbers).

Session 2

Calvin Irons - SESSION FULL
TEACHING MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION– CONCEPTS AND NUMBER FACTS
middle/upper primary

This session will focus on the development of a deep understanding of multiplication and division concepts and their related number facts. Language stages are described that act as a guide for the teaching of the concepts. The stages include concrete and pictorial materials to provide meaning for the formal mathematical symbols. The second part of the session outlines a teaching plan for developing mental strategies using pictorial materials to facilitate the mastery of number facts with a focus on multiplication.

WATCH THIS SPACE- DEVELOPING GEOMETRIC THINKING
lower primary
The development of geometric thinking is a life-long process that is nurtured in the early years of schooling. Through my research with young children I have examined seemingly complex aspects of location with surprising results. In this session we will explore a framework for enhancing visualisation through exploring the relationships between spatial objects, and extend the possibilities associated with location. Hands-on practical tasks linked to the Australian Curriculum will be presented to build children’s personal understanding and knowledge of geometric concepts.

Session 3

Calvin Irons - SESSION FULL
DEVELOPING A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF FRACTIONS AND DECIMALS
middle/upper primary
The Australian curriculum places much more emphasis on the teaching of fractions (and decimals) to the extent that all 4 operations are to be taught for all fractions and decimals by the end of Year 7. This workshop features activities designed to help students to develop a deep understanding of the concepts of fractions and decimal fractions. The session focuses on the effective and appropriate use of models, manipulatives and visual aids with greater emphasis on the role of the number line to provide a basis for equivalence and to help build the link between fractions and decimals.

Rosemary Irons
TEACHING ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION- CONCEPTS AND NUMBER FACTS
lower primary
This session will focus on the development of a deep understanding of addition and subtraction concepts and their related number facts. Language stages are described that act as a guide for the teaching of the concepts. The stages include concrete and pictorial materials to provide meaning for the formal mathematical symbols. The second part of the session outlines a teaching plan for developing mental strategies using pictorial materials to facilitate the mastery of number facts with a focus on addition.

Cancellation fee applies after 27 April 2012.
