Mal Shield Back to Authors

BSc, BEdSt, DipEd, MEd, PhD

Mal was a secondary mathematics and science teacher for 16 years before he moved into teacher education in 1986. Since then he has taught secondary mathematics education to both pre-service and in-service teachers, as well as programs focused on language, technology, and education. Mal’s doctoral study linked literacy theories with mathematics learning in an investigation of student writing in mathematics, and he has conducted research into the written presentation of mathematics to students. His other interests are in curriculum developments in middle school mathematics, particularly proportion and algebra. Mal co-authored four series of mathematics textbooks for Years 8 to 12, and wrote the Level 5 and 5/6 books in the award-winning GO Maths series, a core mathematics program that received an Excellence in Education award from the Australian Publishers Association in 2005.
