Carole is Dean of the School of Educational Innovation and Teacher Preparation at Arizona State University, USA. She has written and collaborated on more than 200 books, monographs, and articles for grades pre-K to 12 and college, three mathematical musical mysteries, and two musical histories of mathematics in the USA. Carole’s research interests focus on assessing students’ understanding of mathematics. She developed the
Assessment of Children’s Understanding of Mathematics, a clinical interview tool for gaining insight into what young children know about big mathematical ideas in each of six domains of mathematics. She is also studying students’ acquisition of the key ideas of algebra. Carole is Past President of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, Member of the Executive Committee of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, and Series Editor for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Pre-K to Grade 2
Navigations series. In 2003 she was inducted into the Massachusetts Mathematics Educators Hall of Fame.
