Carmel Diezmann Back to Authors

Dip Teach, BEd, MEd, MEd (Higher Ed), PhD

Carmel specialises in early childhood and primary mathematics education. She conducts applied research at the Queensland University of Technology, Australia. Her research has revealed three key elements necessary to providing children with rich learning opportunities in mathematics: (1) a comprehensive program that provides many opportunities for children to engage with the content and processes of mathematics through a variety of tasks, (2) tasks that are interesting and challenging for children and make use of different contexts, including everyday situations, and (3) helping children to become proficient at extracting mathematical information from everyday situations (e.g. people, places, objects), resources (e.g. an arrangement of counters), and oral and written language, symbols, and graphics (e.g. pictures, maps, diagrams).
