Stepping Stones Overview

This new mathematics program

  • addresses the 3 content strands and 4 proficiency strands as described in the draft Australian Curriculum (ACARA, April 2009)
  • provides a developmentally-appropriate teaching sequence for Year KYear 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6.
  • increases expectations for student achievement from the first year of school (download expectations for Year KYear 1 and Year 2)
  • provides differentiated instruction for each lesson and across school years.
Year K Note
States and territories refer to the year prior to Year 1 with different terms: K (Kindergarten), P (Preparatory), R (Reception) and T (Transition). For the draft Australian Curriculum, ACARA used "Kindergarten". This is reflected in our core program. ACARA have since decided to change this terminology to "Foundation Year". ORIGO will implement this change to online and print content as is appropriate to minimise any confusion to schools already using the program.

In each year level K–6, there are 16 modules.
Each module includes

  • 8 × 3-step lesson plans (4 lessons in Year K)
  • open tasks for small-group work (learning centres in Year K)
  • multiple options for assessing and recording
  • problem-solving activities
  • differentiated instruction for each lesson
  • differentiated instruction across years
  • printable resources
  • references to optional resources
  • ideas to link numeracy with other subjects.
