Workshops for mathematics educators

January

February

Developing the Fundamentals of Problem Solving

Good problem solvers have more than just a range of efficient strategies that they can choose and use. They also have deep understanding of key concepts and are proficient in skills of mathematics. This all-day workshop will examine what it means to have deep understanding by specifically exploring multiplication and algebra. It will also describe how best to develop the skills of basic number facts in a way that promotes thinking. The participants will finally explore and apply specific problem-solving strategies across the five strands of the mathematics curriculum.

Developing the Essential Strategies of Computational Fluency

This workshop will show you how computational fluency develops from a deep understanding of number and number sense. It includes a demonstration of important visual aids for developing powerful mental strategies that begin with number facts and broaden as they extend to greater numbers. This interactive workshop will be as much “hands on” as it is "minds on.” You will leave with a range of practical activities and games to use immediately in the classroom.

Intervention Strategies for Struggling Students in Mathematic

Identifying conceptual, and not just procedural, "holes" in students' thinking enables us to implement more effective techniques for working with struggling mathematics students. This workshop examines the purposeful use of concrete, pictorial, and symbolic representations to fill the conceptual "holes" of struggling students. Particular attention is given to making connections between different representations of key concepts. Strategies to cater for all students in a mixed-ability classroom and practical ideas for implementation will provided.
