Stepping Stones Pre-K Comprehensive Mathematics is designed to promote success through developmentally appropriate, play-based, meaningful activities that are rich with language experiences. Stepping Stones Pre-K is governed by high program standards from state specific Pre-K guidelines, NAEYC, and HeadStart standards, and is written specifically for 4-year-olds to ensure school readiness for kindergarten.
This program builds the foundation for the development of mathematics concepts and skills that are necessary for children to progress to more in-depth study in the elementary school setting. Additionally, social-emotional learning has been strategically placed throughout the program to ensure growth in both mind and character.
The learning experiences educators can create using Stepping Stones Pre-K Comprehensive Mathematics are planned so children interact in an informal environment with play, child-initiated explorations, and guided instruction activities, where appropriate. Everyday activities are used to empower children when learning new mathematical ideas. These include:
2 learning centers – child-directed and teacher facilitated activities to incorporate the gradual release of responsibility when conversing and engaging with the concept or skill
2 community centers – child-directed independent activities that take place in free-choice centers such as the block, kitchen, sand, water, art, science, and listening center
Everyday activities are used to empower children when learning new mathematical ideas. Care has been taken to incorporate appropriate mathematical language and the activities are strategically sequenced and designed to promote the use of language through interactions with peers and adults. Children are encouraged to talk about and describe their mathematical thoughts using concrete tools and pictorial models.
