# Webinar / Bite-Sized Mathematics Series Fall 2021

###### Math served up one small bite at a time!

Join the Fall 2021 Bite-Size Learning Webinar series to learn strategies for accelerating learning in your classroom this year. There isn’t time to reteach content students may have missed during the pandemic disruption, and there will be gaps if we simply move on with grade-level content. Accelerating content from prior grades into the current grade level is an effective tool for meeting students where they are and supporting them to move forward. These webinars share resources and strategies for accelerating learning in a variety of key topics in mathematics: mastery of basic facts, extending fluency beyond basic facts, problem solving & reasoning, mathematical language, and understanding fractions.

Over the next three months, we are serving up small, bite-sized virtual professional learning sessions covering a variety of topics. Accelerating Strategic Reasoning for Basic Facts with Games
Presenter: Rob Nickerson, ORIGO Learning Services Educator

In this session, participants will explore the doubles strategy for addition as it is utilized from the primary grades through the intermediate grades.  Visual models and interactive games will be used to reinforce the strategy.  Since the ‘doubles strategy’ is versatile, we will explore extensions beyond the basic fact range.  Join us as we explore the progression of the ‘doubles strategy’ as a means for accelerating the learning for all elementary aged students.

Participants will be able to…
• Incorporate interactive games into whole/small group learning
• Use visual models to support strategy instruction
• Infuse progression of ‘doubles’ into current accelerated instruction

In this session, participants will focus on providing mathematical tasks that support problem-solving and the use of critical thinking and reasoning skills.  These tasks will incorporate the use of instructional strategies to foster discourse, productive struggle, practices/processes, and vocabulary development to accelerate the learning for elementary aged students.  Join us as we explore the richness and importance of problem solving!

Participants will be able to…

• Utilize mathematical tasks to accelerate learning
• Embed strategies to current instructional practices
• Incorporate mathematical vocabulary into problem solving instruction

Accelerating Mathematical Language through Shared Reading

In this session, participants will explore engaging children in literature to build collaboration skills, develop previous content and provide mathematics contexts, utilizing a focus on visual representations and vocabulary.  Literature can be a vehicle to support collaboration skills by sharing and respecting others’ ideas.  Literature can support concepts and vocabulary, such as difference, through the context of fair sharing.

Participants will be able to-

• Engage and connect students to previous understanding with new concepts
• Utilize visual models, vocabulary, and language for concept development
• Incorporate literature into mathematics lessons to support collaboration

Guiding Question:

How might we use literature and vocabulary to ‘accelerate the learning?’

How might we utilize visual models for concept development?

How might we develop vocabulary understanding just in time to accelerate the learning?

Accelerating Understanding of Fractions as Numbers through Visual Representations
Presenter: Melinda Schwartz, ORIGO Learning Services Educator

October 28, 2021

In this session, participants will explore how educators can leverage student understandings from K-3 to promote success in operating with fractions, utilizing a focus on visual representations, vocabulary, and contextual situations. Experiences that third through fifth grade students have had operating with whole numbers, as well as their experiences with a variety of fraction representations will pave the way for their understanding of operations with fractions. Using a model for accelerating instruction, participants will explore how to help students connect these basic understandings of whole number operations to operations with fractions. For the sake of this session, multiplication will be used as an example. Participants will be able to apply the same structure in building a design for accelerating the learning of operating with fractions when using addition, subtraction, or division.

Participants will be able to…

• Identify pre-requisite understandings for multiplication with fractions, including vocabulary.
• Utilize visual models to support the understanding of multiplying with fractions.
• Utilize contextual situations provided, such as Think Tanks, to begin their accelerated instruction.
• Incorporate a framework for acceleration in their teaching of operations with fractions involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

• How might teachers leverage what students know about multiplying whole numbers to accelerate their learning of multiplication with fractions?
• How might contextual situations, such as those in Fraction Think Tanks aid teachers in utilizing this model?

Accelerating Understanding of Procedural Fluency by Extending Basic Fact Strategies

November 11, 2021

In this session, participants will explore how educators can leverage some strategies from basic facts to promote success with extensions to larger whole numbers, fractions and decimal fractions utilizing a focus on visual representations and vocabulary.

Participants will be able to:

• Provide engaging activities and tasks to support ‘accelerated learning’
• Use the ‘Make Ten’ strategy to extend basic facts with larger numbers, fractions, and decimals.
• Infuse progression of ‘Make Ten’ to support grade level standards to accelerate learning

• How might we use the ‘make ten’ strategy to accelerate computation in grades 3-5?
