Connecting Representations for Deep Learning in Mathematics Webinar Series
Presented by Sara Delano Moore, Ph.D., Vice President, Content and Research, ORIGO Education
For students to grow into successful adults, they need to be comfortable with thinking mathematically. Our lives are full of data and decision-making where mathematics is important. When we think about mathematics in school, however, we tend to focus on the symbols. For many students, mathematical symbols are squiggles on the page and so abstract they feel random and disconnected from everyday life. How can we change this?

The importance of language
In the first part of this two-part webinar series, we will explore the importance of language in making sense of math. Language helps connect symbolic math to real-world contexts– making math more relevant to everyday life. We also need to know how to “read” mathematical notation – 5 ÷ 2 is read as “five divided by two” or “how many twos are there in five.” This session will share strategies for building mathematical language for every learner, starting with picture books and progressing to problem-solving.

The importance of physical and visual representations
In the second part of this two-part webinar series, we will explore the importance of concrete and virtual manipulatives in making sense of math. In everyday life, math is about stories – the story of a trip to the grocery store or the story of planning a budget for a trip. This session will share strategies for strengthening problem solving and sense-making through the use of objects and images.
