As students learn the stages of each operation, they recognize the different situations and create helpful representations. Deep learning, as described in John Hattie’s Visible Learning™ research, focuses on recognizing relationships among ideas. When students are engaged in deep learning in the mathematics classroom, they are actively seeking to understand the underlying structure of mathematics. This is the thinking encouraged by the process standards in Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Supporting students to use and connect multiple representations of mathematics is one strategy for helping students progress from surface learning to deep learning. Visual models are particularly important, as for many learners they connect concrete models to abstract representations. This session will explore the use of a variety of representations, including visual models, for developing student understanding of subtraction, multi-digit multiplication, and fraction division.

Do you wonder why students struggle with learning fractions? This interactive workshop will focus on the underlying, and often missing, concepts necessary for students to be successful with fractions. We will explore different representations and interpretations of fractions, and why they are so critical. We will also consider how the meaning of the numerator and denominator change when the fractions are interpreted in different ways.
